A Complex Problem

For decades the City of Edmonton’s park signage standard was custom sustainable cedar, built from kiln-dried western red cedar. Cedar is renewable and beautiful, but Alberta’s climate is hard on it, and holding that finish means recurring staining and coating across thousands of assets. As the City modernized its design standards, it needed modern park signage that delivered the same warmth and the same service life while pulling annual maintenance out of the Parks operating budget.
 

A Simple Solution

Hi Signs produces the City’s current park signage standard to specification, in-house in Edmonton. Structural HSS posts are wrapped in architectural film for a faux-wood finish that holds its colour without staining. Panels are finished in two-part polyurethane, the same chemistry used in automotive refinishing, and set on concrete footings for a permanent, plumb installation. The Result

Residents get the warmth of the cedar era with none of the upkeep. The City gets a park sign that arrives to specification, survives freeze-thaw and UV, and does not return as a maintenance line every few seasons. As a City of Edmonton Master Agreement Holder, Hi Signs fabricates to the standard rather than approximating it, which matters on a program measured in decades and thousands of installations across the park and trail network.
