Indigenous Signage

A Complex Problem

Indigenous communities and public spaces require thoughtful, respectful, and culturally appropriate Indigenous Signage that reflects their heritage, traditions, and languages. The challenge was to create signage that not only educates visitors about the land’s sacred significance but also integrates Indigenous languages and symbols. These signs needed to be inclusive, durable, and visually aligned with the values of the Indigenous Knowledge & Wisdom Centre. Additionally, they had to provide wayfinding and educational information while honouring the cultural importance of the space.

A Simple Solution

Hi Signs partnered with the Indigenous Knowledge & Wisdom Centre to develop custom signage that blends cultural sensitivity with functional design. The signs feature greetings in multiple Indigenous languages, including Cree, Dene, and Michif, as well as traditional symbols that hold cultural significance. The signage is designed to guide visitors, educate them about the cultural importance of the area, and foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

The Result

Hi Signs successfully delivered a series of Indigenous signage that not only serves its practical function as wayfinding and educational tools but also celebrates Indigenous culture. The signage enhances visitors’ understanding of the land’s cultural significance while preserving the dignity and heritage of the Indigenous communities. These signs are now a key feature in sacred public spaces, promoting cultural respect and awareness.
