Community Identity Signage

A Complex Problem

Killam sits on Highway 13 in east-central Alberta, where most people meet the community for the first time at highway speed. Council wanted a community identity signage that would carry the Town’s identity at full scale, hold its own against an open prairie horizon, and still be standing a generation from now without becoming a recurring line in the operating budget. It also had to be delivered by one accountable party rather than a chain of subtrades, and it had to survive Alberta freeze-thaw, road spray, and snow clearing at grade.
 

A Simple Solution

Hi Signs worked directly with Council on a design-build basis, carrying the project from concept through structural engineering, fabrication, masonry, electrical, and installation. The design treats Killam’s brand mark as an architectural element rather than a graphic on a panel: three staggered planes, ribbed green metal referencing the region’s grain bins, warm bronze banding, and a stacked stone base that takes the abuse at grade. Structure is galvanized steel and welded aluminum, sealed and drained so water is never trapped in a joint.
 

The Result

The feature now anchors Killam’s highway approach as a permanent civic asset, working as hard after dark as it does at noon. Three LED systems light the identification, halo the logo mark, and graze the panel texture. Residents have a landmark that reads as home. Council has an ownable image for economic development, grant applications, and community communications. Because the structure is galvanized, welded, and finished to hold its colour, the Town’s ongoing obligation is cleaning rather than a repaint cycle.
